Orientation

Prior to the first and second semester, the International Student Advisors organises an introduction program for new international students. This one-day program consists of practical and general information. The introduction program is always held at the beginning of each semester, in August and January.

Accommodation

A limited number of one-room studio apartments are available for exchange students at KI. Most of these rooms are located in student residences situated about 10 minutes by bus from KI. The rooms are student dormitory-type accommodation, simply furnished, with a private shower and toilet. Kitchen facilities and launderettes are shared, though kitchen utensils are not included in the rent, nor are meals. KI equips the rooms with curtains, blankets, pillows, and lamps, but no towels or sheets. An internet broadband system is installed in the rooms. All rooms are for single occupancy only. The monthly rent is included in the fee.

To give an idea of the cost of living, a feasible monthly budget for a
single person might be as follows:

On average a EuroScholar student will need around 450-500 Euro per month. This estimate does not include accommodation since this is included in the EuroScholars program fee.

Health Insurance

Students coming through an agreement with Karolinska Institutet are insured by the Swedish State’s Insurance for Foreign Students in Sweden.

Student Visa

Students from North America (with a United States or Canadian nationality) need a residence permits for studies in Sweden. Currently, financial proof of at least SEK 7 300/month is required from the Swedish Migration Board and should probably be viewed as a minimum.

Student ID card

All registered students receive a KI card (“KI-kortet”), which grants access to students’ computer rooms on the campuses. The card is a standard type card, which makes it compatible with many other passage systems, such as those used at the KI facilities in Solna, Huddinge and at the Stockholm hospitals.

It is no longer mandatory for all students to belong to the local student association and to pay a membership fee. However, a member of a Student union with a membership ID card (“Mecenatkortet”) a student will get discounts on a national and local level on travel, hotels, clothes, computers, books, music etc.

Computer Access and E-mail account

Upon registration students will receive a KI email account. Students are offered free access to computer facilities around the two campuses. Wireless networking is also widely available on campus areas.

Internet access is also available in the student rooms through a broadband system. The connection fee and subscription have to be paid by the tenant.

Libraries

The KI Library, KIB, is the largest medical library in the Nordic region. The library, which houses international medical and scientific journals, books and databases, consists of two service units and a network of computerised services. The service units have different focuses: Biomedicine at the KIB library in Solna, and Odontology, Health care and Nursing at the KIB library in Huddinge. KIB has study rooms and areas for individual and group study.

Bookstores

Medicinska bokhandeln is the name of two bookstores owned by the Medical Students’ Association. They are located at Berzelius väg 3 (Solna) and Moas torg under the name Harrys Böcker (Huddinge). Apart from medical books, they also sell many other types of literature, including paper-back fiction in English and French.

Student Services

The international student coordinators provide information for international students. Service points are available at Berzelius väg 3 on Campus Solna and at Alfred Nobels Allé 12 on Campus Huddinge. Student Health Service - Studenthälsan

The student health services aims to promote physical and psychological well-being among students in various ways and to establish a good study and social environment. The student health services primarily works to prevent problems occurring through individual consultations, group activities and through efforts which focus on the study environment.


The Student Health Centre is situated at Campus Huddinge, where a doctor, nurses and a counseling service are available. The Health Center also offers consultations with a physiotherapist and a psychiatrist. There is also an additional clinic at KI Campus Solna.

Sports and Recreational Facilities

KI Friskvård provides health promotion facilities for all employees, researchers and students, who have free access to ergonomic, light and massage rooms at Theorells väg 6 on Campus Solna. On Campus Huddinge students have free access to a training centre at Alfred Nobels Allé 23.

Friskis & Svettis provides aerobics, spin cycling and gym at Nobels väg 8 on Campus Solna campus. Employees and students at KI are entitled to a special discount.

The student sports association (SSIF – Stockholms Studenters Idrottsförening) arranges a wide range of different sporting activities, such as basketball, dancing and sailing. The SSIF catalogue is available. As a member of the Medical Student Association you are entitled to a special discount.

The Medical Students’ Association - Medicinska föreningen (MF)

The student associations at KI offer a broad spectrum of activities. Besides organising parties, student theatres, excursions etc the association is also represented in all decision making boards of Karolinska Institutet. It is mandatory for all registered students at KI to join a student association and to pay the association fees. The Medical Students' Association (MF) is the largest of the three student associations at Karolinska Institutet. MF was founded in 1877, making it the oldest student union in Stockholm. Today the union has around 7,000 members. MF has its own building on Campus Solna and an office located at Campus Huddinge.
