The cost of living in Helsinki is in average €600 - 900 / month, including student dormitory housing. This includes unlimited public transportation as well.

Orientation

The University arranges orientation programs at the beginning of both academic terms. Information on the program is available at www.helsinki.fi/orientation

Study Facilities

The University of Helsinki offers a good combination of traditional and most modern study and learning facilities, including laboratories and other experimental facilities. The University has a language center offering courses to all students interested in a foreign language and additionally there are special classes for Finnish for International Students.

The Student Union of the University of Helsinki offers a wide range of student support and services. There are many clubs related to sports, music, theatre etc.

Student Support

Upon arrival all new students are met at the airport/train station/harbour if requested. In connection with the orientation programme students are placed in tutor groups headed by a more experienced fellow student from the same faculty.

Student ID-Cards,

All University students receive a Student ID-card entitling them to many services and discounted meals and other benefits.

Computer Access and Email account

The University offers students access to a broad range of computer facilities. Basic services are free of charge for those who have either student or staff status at the University of Helsinki. There are numerous Windows workstations as well as some terminals available at the computer labs. They are all connected to the local networks, UNIX systems and Internet. The labs offer a great variety of application software, printing services, and storage capacity in the servers as well as guidance and advice. The total number of workstations and terminals connected to the University networks is well over 14,000. Wireless networking is also widely available on campus areas.

Libraries

University of Helsinki library and information services are provided at the four different campuses - City campus, Kumpula, Meilahti and Viikki.

On the City Centre Campus, the Undergraduate Library provides services for the undergraduate students: text-books, course materials etc. The Undergraduate Library is a part of the Aleksandria Learning Centre.

University Sports Services provides a full range of easy-access on-campus sports services. Beginners' courses in various sports, organized throughout the year, guarantee an easy way of getting to know new sports.
