Location: Helsinki, Finland

Finland is a welfare state with the aim of securing for its 5.3 million inhabitants equal opportunities for a good life and for the most efficient use of its resources as possible.

The geopolitical location between West and East has always been reflected in the country’s events and goings on. With this combination of western and eastern influences, Finnish culture has developed into something strong and highly individual.

Finland is a modern parliamentary democracy and a member of the European Union since 1995. The country is very well known for its educational system and has one of the highest per capita expenditure for research and development in the world

Helsinki is the capital of Finland and according to several recent international studies the city is among the most attractive cities of the world because of the high quality of life and excellent living conditions. With a population of over 550,000 Helsinki is just the right size; its services are second to none, and the latest high technology and the closeness to nature meet one another.

Research

The University of Helsinki engages in international top-level research across a broad front. Nearly two-thirds of the units engaged in research received the highest or second-highest grade.

In Finland several research groups are awarded the status of “Centres of Excellence”. The University of Helsinki is home to several such centres and the listing of these is available at http://www.helsinki.fi/research/index.shtml

Language and Culture

The University of Helsinki offers several courses in Finnish language. Some of these courses are specifically designed for visiting students with no prior knowledge of Finnish. The aim of beginners’ courses (4 ECTS) is to offer a basic knowledge of Finnish in order to help the students to cope with some everyday situations. Courses are arranged during both academic terms. Information on registration procedures and other details is available from the Department of Finnish.
