Of the University’s 36,500 students well over 2,500 are international, covering more than 110 countries. There are more than 8,000 employees, of whom over 4,800 are researchers and teachers. For an international student there is no need to know Finnish in order to be able to study as all faculties offer learning opportunities in English. ResearchThe University of Helsinki engages in international top-level research across a broad front. Nearly two-thirds of the units engaged in research received the highest or second-highest grade. In Finland several research groups are awarded the status of “Centres of Excellence”. Some of these courses are specifically designed for visiting students with no prior knowledge of Finnish. The aim of beginners’ courses (4 ECTS) is to offer a basic knowledge of Finnish in order to help the students to cope with some everyday situations. Courses are arranged during both academic terms. The University of Helsinki is the oldest, largest and most multidisciplinary university in Finland. It is also the only Finnish member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU) and ranks consistently among top-20 universities in Europe. It was established in 1640 and has 11 faculties: Theology, Law, Medicine, Arts, Science, Social Sciences, Pharmacy, Biological and Environmental Sciences, Behavioural Sciences, Agriculture and Forestry and Veterinary Medicine.
