The Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) is a comprehensive, internationally oriented research university with approximately 34,000 students, 5000 staff and seven major faculties, teaching Science, Economics and Business, Dentistry, Humanities, Law, Social and Behavioural Sciences and Medical Sciences, covering over 60 academic disciplines. The UvA was founded in 1632, during the Dutch Golden Age, to train students in trade and philosophy, and has grown into a large university with a broad range of study programs taught in English and an excellent international reputation for its research. Since 1901, four UvA professors have been rewarded the Nobel Prize. Like many Dutch universities, the UvA is not a campus-based institution but a city university housed in numerous of historical buildings, most of which are located in the centre of Amsterdam.

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, one of Europe’s smaller countries. With almost 750,000 inhabitants, Amsterdam has all the advantages of a metropolis but fosters its friendly atmosphere. The vibrant and dynamic city is only 9 miles from east to west and boasts unique architecture and over 150 canals, which give Amsterdam its characteristic look. It is also a popular cultural and media centre and an international junction of business and research institutes. In addition, the city has tens of world-renowned museums, art galleries, theatres, concert halls and many public parks. Amsterdam is in the heart of Western Europe, with many European capitals within easy traveling distance.
Academic Highlights and Specific Research Opportunities
The UvA has a long-standing tradition of research, in particular in science, with Nobel Prize winners Van ‘t Hoff, Zeeman and Van der Waals. Other fields of excellence are, among others, cultural anthropology, economics, information law, linguistics, logic, psychology and pedagogical sciences. Every year, the UvA spends over 120,000,000 of its budget on research. The UvA’s research staff produces over 7,500 academic publications annually.
The UvA aims to allow the curiosity of the researcher to define the research agenda as much as possible. The UvA also actively stimulates the development of interdisciplinary research, involving collaboration between various academic disciplines and a joint exploration of scientific questions. The UvA has approximately 1,360 Ph.D. students enrolled, and confers over 310 doctoral degrees annually. Approximately 200 Ph.D. degrees are granted every year in the field of scientific and medical research and approximately 100 in the humanities and social sciences.
Language and Culture
TheInstitute for Dutch as a Second Language, part of the Faculty of Humanitiesoffers various Dutch language courses for international students of the Universiteit van Amsterdam, and for other highly educated foreigners. Euroscholar students will be able to enroll in a Dutch Language and Culture program designed by the Institute, which will incorporate basic knowledge of both the Dutch language and Dutch history and culture. Upon successfully completing the program participants will be awarded 3 ECTS credits. Furthermore EuroScholars students can enroll in a Dutch Culture & Society course of 5 ECTS.
